Reciever Review: ARCAM AVR5 595W 7.1 Ch. 4K Ultra HD HDR
As a consumer, I have purchased Harmon Kardon receivers for decades. They have always provided the highest quality sound. Each receiver that I have bought has lasted well over 10 years. But up until recently, I noticed that I could not find any of their receivers to purchase any more. I thought I was going to have to find another brand of receivers to purchase, until I recently discovered that in March of 2017, Samsung purchased Harman International Industries. Then, as of July of 2017 ARCAM has been bought by Harmon International. ARCAM has been making great receivers since 1976, but now they are using technology from Harmon Kardon.
As a result, that made my buying decision easy. Don't get me wrong, I heard the ARCAM system at my local Best Buy Audio Show Room. I was blown away by how good it sounded. Now, it was just a matter of which model to choose from.
Some of the biggest determining factors was the technology available at the time. I currently have a Samsung QN800C 75 TV. It is an 8K TV with a refresh rate of 120. There are currently no receivers on the market that will natively run at 120. They are all stuck at 60. So rather than waiting for the technology to catch up, I am not going to run any video through the receiver.
With that being said, I chose the AVR5. I did not see a reason to spend more money on a receiver with a higher resolution when I am not planning to run any video through. However, if you want more wattage, you jump to the AVR21 which is more than double the price.
There is such a big difference from Dolby Surround to Doby Atmos. With Doby Atmos, you are immersed with sounds all around you. The rear speakers can be as loud as your front speakers, which doesn't ever seem to be the case with Dolby Surround.
The eArch HDMI port made it possible to send and receive data to and from the TV. Once the receiver was configured correctly The TV connected to the receiver without any problems. The TV turns on the receiver when it is powered on. The TV sends the signal from any other HDMI ports to the receiver, whether it is Doby Surround or it is Doby Atmos.
The only thing I can say about how they can improve is in their instruction manuals. It is not exactly clear how to do things in the manual. Some things you have to look up on YouTube in order to figure out how to do something. Other than that, the receiver is an amazing audio equipment sitting at the heart of my Home Theater.
